This story begins real well showing Canadians united across the board against missile defence. All demographics and age groups united to force the PM to back away from the table. Except for one notable group which I find amusing. The Conservatives once again out of touch with the mainstream. They think they live in the US or sumthin, where nut wingery reigns supreme.
What REALLY caught my eye tho is farther doen in the article and I quote.
Pollster Bruce Anderson says opposition to the plan has little to do with missile defence and a lot to do with opposition to Bush's foreign policy, particularly his prosecution of the war in Iraq as well as White House trade policies.
"(But) I think people would be misunderstanding these results if they came to the conclusion that this is a mandate from Canadians to be churlish with the U.S. administration," said Anderson, who conducted the survey.
"Most Canadians want a friendly and closer relationship between the two countries, but there's caution and skepticism in matters of military and foreign policy."
He said the poll results indicate proponents of missile defence have to do a much better job selling the concept if they ever hope to get Canadians onside
Ummm sure we want a friendlier, closer relationship with the US. THE PROBLEM IS, IT CANNOT HAPPEN UNDER THIS PRESIDENT. A better sell job is NOT going to make BMD fly. I don't oppose it because they did a bad job selling it. I oppose it because it's a BAD idea that doesn't WORK.
As far as being churlish, do people still actually use that word? I dunno, but if Canadians risk being considered "churlish" because we approve speaking truth to power, refuse to bend over to take it in the behind for the US, approve of a PM who actually LISTENS to the will of the people, then I would rather we be churlish than passive submissive and I think most Canadians would agree.
I am one Canadian who believes that our government has to represent CANADIANS. If that means being considered churlish, then so be it. If we don't stick up for our rights and beliefs exactly who will? Not the Americans that's for sure.
