Hear! Hear!

Last week Jeremy Hinzman was denied refugee status in Canada. It was determined he was not a "refugee" in the classic sense and so we, as a nation turned our backs on him. IMO that's an outrage and something needs to be done to fix it. When I first heard the new it made me sad and also ashamed that Canada could take such a stand.

I have always taken pride that we helped the unjustly persecuted and oppressed. Canada has helped people all the way from escaped slaves to defectors and draft dodgers and I am not likely alone in feeling a certain patriotic pride in our stand for social freedom and justice. That's why our denial of Jeremy hurt me. I feel like we are abandoning the some of the principles that made me so proud to be a Canadian.

That brings me to why this story from the Toronto Star that is so right on so many levels.

Canada should put out the welcome mat"
