Atheists get Organized

Atheists historically aren't joiners. We are often closeted prefering either not to rock the boat or out of a misguided respect for mainstream religion. I say misguided not because I believe showing repsect for other beliefs is bad, but because in this case, it more often indicates a lack of respect for their own.

Atheism is a valid worldview. It is neither unethical or unpatriotic. It is not more important than theism nor is it less important.

That said until now we as atheists have not had a voice. A political voice. Oh sure there have been a few lawsuits brought by atheists on behalf of the rest of us more timid timid nonbelievers, and there has been lots of discussions around the world on all things religious and non religious, but unlike other groups of like minded individuals we have not yet spoken with a united voice. We have not been represtented. We have allowed ignorance and mistruths about our beliefs be spread by groups who tend to view us as immoral, unpatriotic, gay, communist, pinko loving (whatever THAT means) perverts who only exist to destroy their religious organizations and somehow deny them their rights to hold their own beliefs. It is shameful that this attitude persists and it is also shameful that admitting to being an atheist pretty much guarantees that you can never be elected to public office, not to mention what happens if you do happen to already be elected and then your atheism becomes known.

Well hopefully that's about to change. George has proven himself over and over to be a uniter and not a divider. In the past it was the democrats, and the gays .... now it's the atheists.
