Like I said last week. The polls showing a liberal decline were premature. Cooler heads have prevailed and Martin stemmed some of the flow with his well recieved national address.
Harper hasn't done himself any favours either. His unholy alliance with the separatists doesn't play well in the rest of Canada and his blatant opportunistic challege of the government is I think generally not an issue that most Canadians can get behind either. So what has he got really? He had about 2 weeks of negative news reports that resulted in a temporary decline in Liberal fortunes. That's it. Nothing else.
His only hope in an election would be a small block of liberal voters jumping to the NDP as a form of protest which MIGHT allow him to squeek thru but that's a big question mark and I am hoping, if he is the cowardly opportunistic bastard I happen to think he is, that he will reverse his position in light of these recent polls.
I happen to believe that all the eulogies the main stream media peddled in regards to the Liberal Party's fortunes during the last couple of weeks were very premature and somewhat self serving. Nothing like a good controversy to raise the ratings huh? I don't think the sky is falling and I don't think most Canadians think it is either, and if the Conservatives continue to push this agenda voters will punish them for their impertinence. For instance ...
And here is the polling response to the opposition's main pitch, in response to the question: "Likelihood to vote for the Conservatives if they forced an election:"Whatever people think of Paul Martin and the Liberals I believe most Canadians are pragmatic and want to hear ALL the evidence before making a choice. The mindless anti-liberal rhetoric I have been seeing in the general public lately seems more based on emotion and fleeting news reports than on logic or the issues and I don't think that tends to relate well to garnering votes when it actually comes down to an election.
12 per cent more likely to vote for them
21 per cent less likely to vote for them
62 per cent has no impact either way
In the end these are of course just my personal opinions but then again I am a Canadian and I am a voter and there are a lot of people like me out there.
